Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Youth STEAM Instructor to lead our Enrichment Clubs Middle School Edition. This part-time role offers motivated individuals a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in a dynamic and innovative work environment. As an instructor, you will facilitate interactive and engaging after-school programs for 6th to 8th graders, working closely with Y staff professionals to lead important youth development projects. Our clubs provide valuable skills and knowledge while promoting teamwork, creativity, and community involvement.

 

Approximately 20 hours per week

Monday - Thursday 2:30pm 4:30pm (Fridays flexible schedule)

 

Preseason start date: August 26th  

Program dates: September 16, 2024 – June 6, 2025

Locations: Freehold Family Y / Marlboro School District

Responsibilities

  • Program Planning and Delivery:
    • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging activities and lessons across five enriching programs:
      • STEM Explorers: Conduct hands-on activities and projects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
      • Leadership and Community Service: Develop leadership skills and a sense of civic responsibility through community service projects.
      • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Introduce the basics of entrepreneurship and foster creativity and business skills.
      • Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship: Teach responsible and critical navigation of the digital world.
      • Life Skills and Personal Development: Equip youth with essential life skills for personal growth and independence.
    • Classroom Management:
      • Manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment.
      • Help resolve conflicts or behavioral issues among students through effective communication, active listening, and mediation techniques.
    • Collaboration and Coordination:
      • Collaborate with program coordinators to ensure activities align with program goals and standards.
      • Work closely with fellow staff to coordinate schedules, share responsibilities, and create a cohesive and supportive program environment.
    • Student Progress and Engagement:
      • Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere that motivates students to participate and succeed.
      • Track progress of all activities, provide incentives, and celebrate achievements to keep students motivated.
    • Safety and Well-being:
      • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during club activities.
      • Follow safety protocols, administer first aid when necessary, and ensure students are aware of and adhere to safety guidelines.
      • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations, following established procedures.
    • Communication:
      • Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents/guardians, and fellow staff members, sharing important updates, concerns, and achievements.

Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Minimum of two years’ experience working with youth and teens.
    • Proven experience working with people of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    • Experience with middle school-aged youth in STEAM and enrichment programs.
  • Educational Background:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education, Youth Development, or a related field preferred.
    • Pursuing or having completed a degree in STEAM or a related field is a plus.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Proficient computer technology and Microsoft Office skills.
    • Excellent written, oral communication skills, and organizational abilities.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with students and encourage positive behavior change.
    • Ability to engage and motivate students.
  • Specialized Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with the unique aspects of an after-school setting.
  • Teamwork and Independence:
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Passion for education and youth development.
